Public Guide: Getting Court Documents in BC (Free & Paid Options)

How anyone in British Columbia can access court documents: free via Courthouse Libraries BC, paid via Court Services Online (CSO), or by requesting copies from the registry.

Way #1 — Free

Courthouse Libraries BC (in person, on their computers)

FreeCase viewDownload available files

At any Courthouse Libraries BC location you can use CSO E‑search for free: view case files and download available documents (typically 10–30% of the file; affidavits and exhibits are not provided online).

  • Visit your nearest branch and ask for access to CSO E‑search.
  • Search by File Number, Party Name, or Date Range.
  • Save the Docket/Filed Documents log, Appearances, and Orders/Judgments.

Tip: bring a USB stick. Printing is available for a small fee.

Way #2 — From home

Court Services Online (CSO) — paid view

$6 per case file Case view Downloads if available

The same CSO data is available from home/office: pay $6 to view one court case file (one file number). You can download items only if that case has online access enabled for those documents.

  • Open CSO and choose E-search; searching by file number is easiest.
  • Pay the fee; review Documents/Docket, Appearances, and Orders.

$6 = one court case file. You get access to Documents/Docket, Appearances, and Orders for that file. Each additional case file requires its own $6 payment. CSO isn’t keyword-searchable — you’ll need a party name, file number, or filing date.

Way #3 — When it's not online

Request copies from the court registry

Fee per tariffBroader access for parties

If a document isn’t available online, request paper or scanned copies from the Registry. Members of the public can request publicly available materials; parties to the case may obtain additional items.

  • Provide the file number, date, and document type from the CSO docket (if known).
  • For Small Claims (Richmond): email richmondcourtregistry@gov.bc.ca or visit the registry counter.
